I asked the guys from Train some interesting questions, and I got some interesting answers. Heres what they had to say:

Why Train?
Jimmy Stafford: You know its funny. Everybody asks us that. And we really dont have a good answer.

Youve got to make something up.
JS: Well, its basically, we wanted a strong name something kind of powerful. Actually, we didnt really like it at first, but we decided to go with it for awhile to see if we could grow into it. And we did. After like a year, when we started developing a following we were saying How could we be anything but Train?

How does the songwriting process work for you?
Pat Monahan: I have no idea and I hope I never know.

In a year, where do you see yourselves?
JS: I see Meet Virginia being a hit single, I hope. [The record company executives] think its going to be. So I think that in a year from now, well have two or three singles off the record hopefully and be touring the country, playing large venues opening for big bands like the Tom Pettys of the world and also doing our own headlining large club tour. Because hopefully by then, (smiles) well be all over the airwaves, TV and radio, and well be able to sell out those size rooms and just be a working, functional, self-sufficient band. That is our goal. To turn people on to our music and meet new fans.

Is there one song that you are just sick of playing?
JS: No. Not me personally. Youd think that we would get tired of playing Meet Virginia every night or Free because those are the two singles. But I look forward to them every night because you know that everybody in the audience is going to light up as soon as they recognize the first few notes of the song. As long as the people like the music, I will play it.

What is your favorite city?
JS: Chicago is our home away from home.

Whats the most interesting sight youve seen while driving across the U.S.?
PM: The living vacuum cleaners all around the country: the cows. They just sit there kind of next to the earth.

Do you guys have a worst tour experience?
JS: There was an all-time low. We were driving through Kansas in the wintertime, and we had to stop because they were closing the freeway because it was too icy. So we stopped in a place called Russell, Kansas, home of Bob Dole, and all the nice hotels were filled. We ended up staying in this dumpy hotel and when we opened up our room, there was a snowdrift inside of the room over the top of the heater. The heater was on and the snow just covered it. We had a snowball fight in the room, but it was so freezing.

Pat, where do you buy all of your onstage clothes?
PM: I have my pants made in L.A. by the girl who does No Doubts clothes and Marilyn Mansons clothes. Her name is Debbie and she makes my pants. And my shirts, when I run into something I dig, I get it.

What annoys you about society?
PM: People who, while being ridiculous, will diss their neighbor for how ridiculous they are.

Explain.
PM: I met some people in Washington, D.C. that were backstage with us, hanging out with the band, telling us how disgusting groupies were. (laughs)

If you were going to a costume party as the Spice Girls (theres five guys in Train and there were five Spice Girls), who would be who?
Scott Underwood: Id be the Spice Girl who quit.
JS: I think we all would.

(The song I Am lists a number of things that Monahan has never done. I was wondering if the song still held true.) Have you had time to read about Uncle Tom?
PM: No. I actually hope to make that song irrelevant.

So youre just checking things off?
PM: Thats right. Ive never been on a train. Ive never seen a rodeo. Ive never crashed in the desert. Ive never done a lot of those things. So it still holds true for the most part.

What is your favorite ice cream?
PM: I would say mint chocolate chip.
JS: Its gotta be one of the many Ben & Jerrys flavors: Phish Food. I love Ben & Jerrys Phish Food.

Favorite food?
PM: Sushi.
JS: Sushi.

Have you read a good book lately?
JS: I cant read on the road because I get van-sick.
PM: I did just buy The Little Prince. I was told that I should buy it.

I read that in school. Its hard to read in French when youre in 8th grade.
PM: Yeah, its hard to read in French when youre 210.

Finally, where can I Meet Virginia?
PM: I wish I knew. If you find out, let me know. Shes the ultimate personality, I think.

Train Concert Reveiw by COULDB'VIGINIA

What a weekend! Trainspotting has now officially become my passion!

Let's start from the beginning. My whole family attended Friday's Jones Beach
show. We were all in a great mood as we left our house, when BAMM, some idiot
friend of the guy across the street RAMS my van! The side gate door is
DESTROYED! Luckily my kids were OK. We ended up being VERY late though,
totally missing 7Mary3! Easy to say I was NOT a happy camper!

We DID get there before Train came on, so at least that was a plus! I had
floor seats for my daughter and I. My hubby and son were "up there" a bit,
but not too bad. We were supposed to trade kids at intermission so my son
could come down for MB20 (he's a big fan of theirs too).

The show opened with a terrific version of Respect with Pat doing a fabulous
job on the Sax. Afterwards Pat said "Someone told me before the show that I'm
too sarcastic on stage, they're probably right.........but I'm cute as heck
aint I !!!" They followed with She's On Fire, Meet Virginia (everyone on
their feet singing), Something More (with Jimmy playing a great slide guitar
Rob on bass and Charlie on guitar). Ramble On, I Wish You Would (with Rob
playing harmonica and Pat and I think the guy from 7Mary3 on bongos). Pat
talked about an e-mail he had gotten from a close friend the day before. It
said how it was so sad watching him leave home for the West Coast. He said
his friend sat on Pat's front porch drinking a beer with Pat's father
watching with tears in their eyes as their car disappeared. Pat then
dedicated the next song to his father, which was Let It Roll. They followed
with Free with Paul from MB20 sitting in (they paused for the audience to
sing and the only one who did in my section was ME!), Then they closed with
Drops of Jupiter which had everyone singing along. At one point in the show,
Pat was talking about how great it was to be at Jones Beach and to be on tour
with Matchbox and 7 Mary 3, and suddenly said "hey, that doesn't smell like
fresh air!" Pat's dancing was it's usual perfection! All in all it was a
great performance. The only way it could have been better was if it had been
longer!

Well, anyhow, my family met to trade kids and I tell him I found out I got an
invite to the meet and greet! I didn't know I was going when we split up,
because we got there so late. So they waited around with me and got to come
back stage too! My whole family got to meet the guys! They ARE the nicest
bunch of people you've ever met. The first one I talked to was Jimmy, who was
so sweet! I told him who I was from the board, and he said he'll have to look
for me. YES, they DO read this thing! I apologized for an old post that got a
little out of hand, and he accepted it graciously. Some of it did upset his
family. SO ALL YOU HORMONE CRAZED NEWBIES WATCH OUT!! These are a wonderful
group of family guys, so let's remember that when we're typing!

They had their families with them, and I got to meet Rob's "posse" as he
called them. What a handsome family! I told Rob I'd bring cookies to Boston,
and he asked for oatmeal raisin, his favorite! He told me Pat's favorite is
chocolate chip, but they're all trying to watch their weight. They all looked
great to me!

They all took pictures with us, and signed our programs. I told them what
happened to my van on the way there, and since I got so upset I had forgotten
the CDs I wanted to get signed. They asked me "didn't you say you were coming
to Boston?" (yes, they actually listened to me when I spoke to them, none of
that pompous "OK, whatever" stuff from these guys!) and when I said yes, they
said "no problem, we'll sign everything tomorrow"! My daughter was in
LaLaLand, saying how she never wanted to wash her hand because Pat touched
it. She said she wished she had gotten a hug from him, so I told her to go
ask him. She was afraid to, so I asked for her. He said "sure!" and
immediately got right down on his knees (she's very short) and gave her a
great big hug!!! What a wonderful guy, my daughter was on air for the rest of
the night!! We hung around and chatted for a bit, and then went off to see
MB20.

Matchbox was great too. They had a well put together light show and the stage
was awesome with the percussion and keyboards on elevated platforms with a
staircase between them. They used every inch of that set to the fullest
putting on a really wonderful show! Rob Thomas was in great voice, and the
band was incredible! I wish I had the set list for you, but I was still
flying from meeting Train! Sorry MB20 fans!

The Boston show was even better! After a 6 hr drive, my sister Donna and I
arrived at the Boston Pavilion and hooked up with Maria D and her husband Ed.
It was an open air venue, like the rest of the tour, but it was much smaller.
It was a very nice place, all floor area, and we had great seats! We were
sitting right behind Maria and Ed in the 4th and 5th rows just off to the
right of the stage. They ran a little late, but they made up for it when they
came on stage! They played for about 90 minutes as opposed to the 45 minutes
with MB20.

Samuel Adams sponsored the event so there was a lot of beer! Pat came on
stage and said, "It figures, now that we've all quit drinking beer....here we
are with all the free beer you could ask for!" Of course WE had to pay $5
each for a plastic cup of Draft!! Even though we had great seats, I (having
brass balls) talked my way past security and ended up front row center RIGHT
IN FRONT OF PAT!!! They opened with She's On Fire, I Wish You Would (Rob on
harmonica and Pat on the bongos). Pat then said "This next song goes out to
everyone who's attracted to me!" and launched into Meet Virginia (letting the
crowd sing a bit). They then did It's About You, Something More (with Jimmy
on slide, Charlie on guitar, and Rob on bass). Pat then talked about how
"Madonna's pedicurist sold the star's leftovers on eBay for $6000, I think I
made a bad investment" and went into Ramble On, I Am (Jimmy playing both
guitar and mandolin), Respect (Pat on sax), Hopeless (Rob on bass, Charlie on
guitar, and Jimmy on slide) Heavy, Eggplant (with a kick ass percussion duel
between Scott and Pat on bongos), Free (yes they paused again for audience
participation, and I was the ONLY one singing....again!), Getaway (with Pat
playing the bells and sax), and then Drops of Jupiter (of course everyone
sang that one!). They came back to do 2 encore songs, Mississippi (Pat on
trumpet) and I Want You To Want Me (everyone went WILD for that).

The four of us then went backstage and chatted with Rob and Jimmy for a
while. They thanked me for the cookies, but they kept asking me "Why does
everyone want to make us fat?". I told them they can always share them with
their kids, and they were both happy with the suggestion! They were in a bit
of a hurry to get going. They had to drive all the way to Virginia Beach for
a show the next day. So after a while (and a few more pictures and CD
signings) they excused themselves to get ready. Their road manager Thomas
came out and talked with us for a while (he is SO nice) and brought my CDs to
Pat, Charlie, and Scott to sign also. He came back and we talked some more,
told me he'd see me the next time I made it to a show, and off they went! I
can't wait to see them again!!

Fuel was already on when we came back out, and the security got really tight.
No talking my way past them this time! That was OK though, because we DID
have really great seats anyway. Fuel gave a really high-energy charged show!
They were great! People started crowd surfing and moshing, driving the
security people nuts! It was a truly wonderful show.
